    Emily Dickinson appreciation thread

It's Emily Dickinson's birthday today, which I think is a good enough excuse for an appreciation thread. Post your favorite Dickinson poems here, if you have any.

They say that "Time assuages" -
    Time never did assuage -
    An actual suffering strengthens
As Sinews do, with Age -

Time is a Test of Trouble -
    But not a Remedy -
If such it prove, it prove too
    There was no Malady -
If you ever drop your keys into a river of molten lava, let 'em go, because man, they're gone.

"We never know how high we are
Till we are asked to rise
And then if we are true to plan
Our statures touch the skies --"

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
If you ever drop your keys into a river of molten lava, let 'em go, because man, they're gone.

Some keep the Sabbath going to Church –
I keep it, staying at Home –
    With a Bobolink for a Chorister –
And an Orchard, for a Dome –

Some keep the Sabbath in Surplice –
I, just wear my Wings –
And instead of tolling the Bell, for Church,
    Our little Sexton – sings.

God preaches, a noted Clergyman –
And the sermon is never long,
So instead of getting to Heaven, at last –
    I’m going, all along.

Yay Emily! My boyfriend used to live right next to the graveyard she was buried in.

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
    I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
    Or cool one pain,
    Or help one fainting robin
    Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

    Wild Nights - Wild Nights!
    Were I with thee
    Wild Nights should be
    Our luxury!

    Futile - the Winds -
To a Heart in port -
    Done with the Compass -
    Done with the Chart!

    Rowing in Eden -
    Ah, the Sea!
    Might I but moor -
    Tonight - With Thee!

^^THIS has always been my favorite poem by Emily Dickinson.

She sights a Bird - she chuckles -
She flattens - then she crawls -
She runs without the look of feet -
Her eyes increase to Balls -

Her Jaws stir - twitching - hungry -
Her Teeth can hardly stand -
She leaps, but Robin leaped the first -
    Ah, Pussy, of the Sand,

The Hopes so juicy ripening -
You almost bathed your tongue -
When Bliss disclosed a hundred Toes -
And fled with every one -
If you ever drop your keys into a river of molten lava, let 'em go, because man, they're gone.

    I'm nobody! Who are you?
    Are you nobody, too?
Then there's a pair of us -don't tell!
    They'd banish us, you know.

    How dreary to be somebody!
    How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
    To an admiring bog!

    I would not paint - a picture -
    I'd rather be the One
    Its bright impossibility
    To dwell - delicious - on -
And wonder how the fingers feel
    Whose rare - celestial - stir -
Evokes so sweet a torment -
    Such sumptuous - Despair -

I would not talk, like Cornets -
    I'd rather be the One
Raised softly to the Ceilings -
And out, and easy on -
    Through Villages of Ether -
    Myself endued Balloon
By but a lip of Metal -
The pier to my Pontoon -

    Nor would I be a Poet -
    It's finer - Own the ear -
    Enamored - impotent - content -
    The License to revere,
    A privilege so awful
    What would the Dower be,
Had I the Art to stun myself
    With Bolts - of Melody!
If you ever drop your keys into a river of molten lava, let 'em go, because man, they're gone.

I measure every grief I meet
    With analytic eyes;
I wonder if it weighs like mine,
    Or has an easier size.

I wonder if they bore it long,
    Or did it just begin?
I could not tell the date of mine,
It feels so old a pain.

I wonder if it hurts to live,
And if they have to try,
And whether, could they choose between,
    They would not rather die.

I wonder if when years have piled—
    Some thousands—on the cause
Of early hurt, if such a lapse
    Could give them any pause;

Or would they go on aching still
    Through centuries above,
    Enlightened to a larger pain
    By contrast with the love.

    The grieved are many, I am told;
    The reason deeper lies,—
Death is but one and comes but once,
    And only nails the eyes.

There’s grief of want, and grief of cold,—
    A sort they call “despair”;
    There’s banishment from native eyes,
    In sight of native air.

And though I may not guess the kind
    Correctly, yet to me
    A piercing comfort it affords
    In passing Calvary,

To note the fashions of the cross,
    Of those that stand alone,
    Still fascinated to presume
That some are like my own.

Of Bronze - and Blaze -
    The North - tonight -
So adequate - it forms -
    So preconcerted with itself -
So distant - to alarms -
    An Unconcern so sovreign
    To Universe, or me -
    Infects my simple spirit
    With Taints of Majesty -
Till I take vaster attitudes -
And strut upon my stem -
    Disdaining Men, and Oxygen
    For Arrogance of them -

    My Splendors, are Menagerie -
    But their Competeless Show
    Will entertain the Centuries
    When I, am long ago,
An Island in dishonored Grass -
Whom none but Beetles, know -
If you ever drop your keys into a river of molten lava, let 'em go, because man, they're gone.

I never lost as much but twice,
    And that was in the sod;
Twice have I stood a beggar
    Before the door of God!

    Angels, twice descending,
    Reimbursed my store.
    Burglar, banker, father,
    I am poor once more!

    I taste a liquor never brewed --
From Tankards scooped in Pearl --
Not all the Vats upon the Rhine
    Yield such an Alcohol!

    Inebriate of Air -- am I --
    And Debauchee of Dew --
Reeling -- thro endless summer days --
From inns of Molten Blue --

When "Landlords" turn the drunken Bee
Out of the Foxglove's door --
When Butterflies -- renounce their "drams" --
I shall but drink the more!

Till Seraphs swing their snowy Hats --
And Saints -- to windows run --
    To see the little Tippler
Leaning against the -- Sun --

I need to get back to reading more Dickinson.
As Duke always says, "Come love with me… and maybe we can walk through fire together."
