I just spent 2.5 hours at a salon getting my hair professionally coloured for the first time. I felt like how a dog must feel at the groomers... the lady kept telling me to relax. They did a good job and were flattering, asking if I was a student... I came in to get my GREY HAIR covered

Past obsession with Final Fantasy VII is a sort of hidden factor that unites most of the really interesting people on the internet of a certain age.

This is true even if they disagree about everything else. If they're both interesting, there's a good chance both liked FF7.

Lol honestly can't remember how I got into it. I had been planning on playing some Final Fantasy games for many years before though becuase I was always awed by how great the graphics looked compared to basically all other games (mostly the cinematics though,) and then I watched Advent Children and so had to play the game (I think I watched Advent Children before playing it, but not 100% sure it was all around a similar time frame.

I think a big part of my obsession was just that there's a lot of bishounen male characters in the game and it became easy to form obsessive parasocial voyeuristic crushes on the cast (Cloud, Sephiroth, Vincent, Yazoo in Advent Children etc. wasn't that into Genesis which is funny because my first boyfriend was a red head. And also the weird red head character thing in my own writing. Still physically attractive though.) Lots of the characters looked cool too. Obviously the story and soundtrack is also excellent lots of interesting archetypes/story elements and has always been very politically/culturally relevant (there were a bunch of 90s Japanese media works that have only become more relevant with time Serial Experiments Lain is another,) but reading tons of fanfiction about the world helped maintain the obsession. The gameplay is good/fun but it's not my favourite for gameplay that would be Oblivion and Skyrim. Or like WoW. I didn't get addicted to that one surprisingly but I can see how it happens.

Most of the fanfics I read were Cloud/Sephiroth, Cloud/Vincent, Cloud/Sephiroth/Vincent - but that was rare, but weirdly I only started writing 2 fanfics and one of them I didn't finish was Tseng/Rufus because I thought they had a interesting dynamic lol. It was a less common pairing too but there were a bunch of fics. I wasn't that into either character though. Think that pairing/fandom was my first encounter with gunplay, later discovered more gunplay fics in a few other fandoms. On a unconscious level I probably liked how it's phallic and dangerous - so it requires a lot of trust. That makes it a pretty good stand in for a dick. So when Julia Fox jokes without realising (and I love that she instantly jumps to dicks, it took very little.) You're annoyed because she joked men shouldn't have opinions or dicks, I'm annoyed because she only wants a dick/gun for self defence reasons and that's boring. The search for the true sigma female/ubermensch continues. (I don't know her lol. She's been trending on twitter lately.) Anyway haven't read anything like that in years now though. But Loki seems like a great person to try that out on. He has masochist vibes. I have to assume he can't be killed by bullet wounds because otherwise with most of his head exposed throughout The Avengers the film wouldn't really make sense. Most of the compilation games came out around the same time too. Thinking about it now perhaps I played Dirge of Cerberus before playing it too? Probably all in the same year. That's how I discovered Gackt and jrock music as well lol:

I definitely played Crisis Core after the first game though. There was another game Before Crisis that I never played because it only on mobile and I think maybe only in Japan. Probably could get it on emulator now though.

It's not that deep for me though lol, and given its widespread popularity probably tons of people were obsessed with it at one point or another.

Also FFVII and FFVIII were kind of insane because they were split across four ps1 discs. The only console games I've played where that was the case.

Amusing to note at 42 she's an older millennial (1981-1996) and her kid is gen Z. I'm a younger millennial and I'm 32. Millennials were raised by boomers so probably absorbed their ideal life to some extent. I dunno what's going on with gen Z. This is how I got invited to the desert in America in my late 20s by an 18 year old on discord (who started university at age 14...) To do dmt. No I don't think I've met someone who is completely submissive in all situations. That would basically mean they have no opinions/preferences of their own too. I think that guy was annoyed because he read it as being controlling like he'd have to perform according to her whims but it's not a rare dynamic that she brought up like guys who are mostly dominant in every day life but sexually submissive.

More and more this (and related discourse) is sort of happening among American progressives and I don't think the logic exactly makes sense:

While most attempts at reclaiming European heritage are a yt supremacist dogwhistle or otherwise just cringey, this is obviously obviously not her intention and it seems to be the opposite

This also explains cultural appropriation. So many white people don't see themselves as having 'culture,' so they try on other people's. And because of capitalism they get mad when they're told you can't just buy people's identities.

This isn't their culture either though. Firstly because they're American and Americans have a notably different culture from any Europeans and that's just unavoidable due to hundreds of years of separation and they're not their ancestors they're people who were born/raised in this new culture. Which is fine I guess because you also get European larpers like Varg Vikernes (who is also curiously weirdly obsessed with Tolkien for a ethnonationalist,) but it's not 'the culture' of some arbitrary important point in time everyone is grappling for because many of these ideas haven't really been carried down. A lot of the ideas being picked up are based on a fantasy about Paganism which frankly is more compelling than Christian culture I agree. Europe also lost it's culture (again to varying degrees,) after Christianity and formed a new one that didn't really work in the long term because the tension/absence continued on (Western and North West Europe particularly suffered from this,) but also because everything must come to an end when it ceases to appeal and here we are now. Something similar has occurred throughout the Islamic world because it wasn't a natural cultural evolution imo and was quite violent/oppressive and lacked integration. (At least integration without demonisation.)

Also questioning this idea that somehow white Americans embracing ethnic diversity will cure racism. Racism still exists in Europe because non-white people live here, in some areas it's worse, and there's also a deep ethnonationalist movement in Europe so all the smaller groups of white people just fight amongst themselves. Is there slightly less focus on race when everyone's arguing about everything? Possibly but it's not an improvement in my estimation. Here in England we have class warfare over our 75 thousand accents lol. Anywhere you go in the UK you'll end up having conversations about your accent with various stereotypes discussed etc, and people form a lot of judgements based on accent alone. And we still have racism and fighting over culture + religious differences.

Also Americans hate English people due to the history there. So this will all break down when you consider that a bunch of white Americans are mostly ethnically English. It seems largely an attempt to avoid the de-evolution of the Christian concept of original sin as it's been applied to demographic groups by recently moving it from white to English. 'I'm not English so I'm not an oppressor.' Other groups have decided Jewish people are the real oppressors obviously. This blurs into psychology discussions about whether Human groups can exist without an enemy and such, I've seen people online argue no.

Actually to use myself as an example in this experiment I'm English but not very 'genetically' English which isn't surprising as I'm from Luton. I'm 1/8 Welsh and if you go back several generations on my mum's side there's a bunch of Scottish and Irish people who migrated to London and then moved on from there. However that's not the confusing part (as these are cultures that exist that I could move to in this hypothetical scenario,) the confusing part is that my nan was born in Danzig and her parents were from somewhere else in West or East Prussia - I forget which and none of these places exist anymore lol as states! Years ago when I was contemplating signing up for an extra agency (they find you work as an extra on TV shows etc,) they asked a lot of questions and one of those questions was about the ethnic origin of the last three generations of your family and I couldn't answer this because my nan's country no longer exists and she wasn't ethnically or culturally Polish she was actually made stateless because she wasn't ethnically/culturally Polish by the soviets after world war 2.

Eastern and Central Europe has broken up and had people displaced and moved around a lot. Borders changing a lot. My nan's native language is German but she said her family background was Swedish and Russian if you go back a few generations but how do I verify this? She doesn't consider herself German and so which existing culture is mine? My dad identifies more as English than me (quite conservative, I do not like tories or JK Rowling and Posie Parker's whole vibe so will criticise 'establishment English culture' more than him) and he's 1/4 Welsh and 1/2 non British. His mum came to the UK in her 20s lol. He doesn't speak German though. He gave me a Russian name and that's about the extent of that connection otherwise he's very British (switched to buying everything from British businesses at some point recently too, was pro Brexit.) He's probably middle class. But even among like working class culture here in the South people often speak multi cultural London English which takes a lot from the Caribbean due to immigration. It's no more related to black American culture than white British culture is related to the white American culture it's similar because it's Anglo and social media but again you have distinct cultures already.
