Especially when they say they live in the US?
Apparently some people make that assumption until you say what ethnicity you are.

I don't assume a race or culture because I've met people from around the world and many are not native of where they live now. One thing though that I have assumed that has gotten me into trouble is that I assume people online are sane. This backfired on me back in 2007 and this particular insane person stalked me for 5 years after that. I have since gotten way more mistrustful of people online.
The Hokey Pokey IS what it's all about
That thought never crosses my mind.

Sometimes I make assumptions about people I encounter online, but race/ethnicity usually isn't one of them.

Yeah I do it. lol I've been mistaken as Japanese though a couple of times for some reason.
Interesting that I see you're from Vermont & think the same though. I always thought it was a Southern thing.
I don't think so. Like Sagan said, it's just not something that I think of.
I frankly don't care about the ethnicity. If I guessed, I would probably be wrong.
ill ask you right away if you're mexican. that tends to lead to an answer one way of the other so i don't spend time assuming one thing and then finding out one day that what i assumed was wrong. i mean i'm curious, really curious, so i get that answered pretty quickly. next to if you have a criminal record (you get points in your favor for having one of those) or a mental hospital record (even more points are awarded for that distinction) that's the thing i next want to know about you, if you're mexican. i know this can catch people off guard, and it often has, but then i just say, oh, i just had a feeling you were, i don't know why, and that gives me the reputation that im someone who feels things and then acts impulsively on them (which isn't so bad, actually i don't really mind that reputation, though neither do i go to pains to cultivate it) so for me the amount of assuming im doing is minimal.
