    Government blocking Internet sites

Sooo...this is the news of the day in Britain. The Primes Ministers announcement that he's requesting that ISP's but a block on offensive material. Or more specifically, porn.

Most households in the UK will have pornography blocked by their internet provider unless they choose to receive it, David Cameron has announced.

Mr Cameron warned in a speech that access to online pornography was "corroding childhood".
The new measures will apply to both existing and new customers.

Mr Cameron also called for some "horrific" internet search terms to be "blacklisted", meaning they would automatically bring up no results on websites such as Google or Bing.

He told the BBC he expected a "row" with service providers who, he said in his speech, were "not doing enough to take responsibility" despite having a "moral duty" to do so.

He also warned he could have to "force action" by changing the law and that, if there were "technical obstacles", firms should use their "greatest brains" to overcome them
The good news is though...that you can opt out! You can choose not to have your web access blocked. So a lot of people are saying that's okay. Heck, this has nothing to do with pornography. It's the principle that bugs me. Why isn't it a "Opt in" rather than an "opt out?"

No choice but to opt in parental controls came preinstalled on my laptop. It took me half a day to remove them when they decided that this site, along with tumblr, wikipedia, and my email account were inappropriate sites for me to use, all because of a password that supposedly came with the computer that I couldn't find to uninstall it, and so I had to do some technical complexity to get thing off so I could use my email account again.

They're also on the mobile internet on my cell. Which was useless, since all it did was block my access to a news site, and asking me to insert my credit card details to confirm I was old enough to view this site and see what was going on in the world whilst being stuck on a bus, bored.

I don't like filtering. Even if there is an opt out, it should not be presumed that I will opt in. It's the principle that bugs me. How long before the governments moves to block anything else they deem inappropraite for me to view? With this government, it wouldn't surprise me.

Heck, I don't even watch porn, but I'm debating opting-out in protest. Once again, the prime minister trying to win cheap votes.

Why can't lazy [BEEP] parents be responsible for their own kids? And since when does parental filters ever work? All they do is filter out anything and everything, what they intended to filter out and everything else as well.

I read that rape porn is being criminalized now, does that mean anything depicting rape as in consensual BDSM porn or actual rape? How can you expect some conservative to make proper judgement when basically everything and anything in life and society is "morally wrong" and thus needs to be censored or filtered out? Where is the personal responsibility of the parents of these kids?

^That is exactly my problem. I don't use porn, but I have no problem with it. If a consenting adult wishes to partake it in then that consenting adult should be allowed to. If someone who's also an adult wishes to watch it wants to then that person should be allowed to without having to feel shamed that they "Opted-out". And it is perfectly possible to install parental controls yourself, which usually come bundled with antivirus these days, which will block search terms. Last I checked, the majority of us in this country are adults.

They've yet to come up with a solution that will allow multiple devices on the same network to opt-in or opt-out. But apparently, if you're going to be a responsible parent, then you have to do this, this and this and not do this.

I'm opting-out simply because this pisses me off, and I don't want some government official deciding whats okay for me to view and whats not. I live in a democracy. But lately, the conservatives have been trying to prove that we don't. I can't see them being reelected.

People rape and murder because they see it on TV or the internet. I am glad I never saw tv where people died or played video games where characters died as a kid. Or else I would be a murderer.

I am glad other kids never emotionally scarred me like the internet would. I can never tell if the internet is real or not, like most people. I am quite sure in fact that these kids aren't learning these behaviors from other kids or adults. The internet rewires childrens brains so that they cannot feel bad when they are hurting others.

^It's not that I have anything against what they're doing, I just think it should be an "opt-in if you want it" and not a "opt-out and we'll put you on some list" thing. I've heard the whole "video-games kills society", but I refuse to accept it as the whole reason for why bad things happen. Even so, there's an 18+ restiction on a lot of games and films, and putting an internet block isn't going to stop things that happen.

Although O2 asking for my credit card details might seem odd, it isn't really. You have to be 18 to enter into a credit contract, or to be allowed to have a bank overdraft. I haven't actually experimented with what the block on my cell phone actually blocks, but I get the feeling that pornography will be on the list. Other things I've heard of being blocked are gambling sites, any sites related to alchohol, racism, hate speech, terrorism...

Really, what they should do is put a block on sites like that, and then have some way of proving, such as taking a small amount off a persons credit card, which you even be refunded as O2 does, to prove that the person is an adult.

There is absolutely no research that shows any connection between viewing violent video games or rape porn and committing in real life. This is why legislature needs to be based in fact and in research rather than in ignorance and unfounded claims such as the ones that you have made Compulsive.

This thread also isn't about allowing minors to watch porn or rape porn as it is about parents that cant take personal responsibility.

What if a person lives in a rental unit? Are tenants going to have to go and ask all their landlords to opt-out? How ridiculous and awkward is that?

Along with the new laws, apparently owning anything that depicts rape is a crime. So I guess that means if you own a DVD copy of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, you are liable to be arrested and charged.

BDSM and rape play among consenting adults isn't a crime, but apparently filming it is now thanks to the brainless conservatives in the UK government. Conservatives just don't like this concept of freedom. Also, somehow conservatives that are against big government think that some how more laws = a smaller government. Just more hypocritical behavior from those who legislate based on their morals and hearts rather than rational thinking, logic, and reason.

Same here. Sad to think that there was a train crash that killed a whole load of people today, and that baby was on the royal news. One baby over a whole load of people that died. That's what our countries coming too.

Thank you. I am not arguing that rape is okay, or that children should be allowed to watch porn. Let me put it this way:

Between consenting adults, thats fine. If the government wants to run credit card checks to check the person is actually an adult or put a high tax on porn as they do with alchohol, cigarettes...by all means, fine.

I certainly cannot stand this government right now. They're prepared to gurantee 50% of a persons mortgage in a time when everything else is being cut, as well as taking a huge pay rise, convinced that they're tiny little £65,000 salary is not enough cash.

Seriously. Sixty-Thousand pounds is a lot of money. That would be the salary of quite a few familys for three years.

But of course. They're all too busy getting there moats cleaned at the expense of the taxpayer to really care about the rest of society.

I really want out of this country sometimes.

Now there is a conservative in Cananda by the name of Joy Smith who is also toying around with the idea of "filtering" porn (good luck with that). http://www.vice.com/en_ca/read/filte...is-a-dumb-idea

Well, considering that you can go to pretty much any site nowadays, and get AdultFriendFinder popups having a naked lady masturbating on a webcam (god, those are annoying!), I agree with this.

Adult content should be for adults. There should be protections for parents to keep their kids from seeing it. Everyone knows an adult has these fantasies, but parents shouldn't have to worry if their son or daughter sees something and gets addicted.

The porn that is out now is different from the porn that was around in the early 90's. It's much, much worse.

If these politicians are also trying to filter this for adults, who have sexual thoughts and minds, well, good luck with that. Get a proxy, and go around it. Not everyone has little kids in the home, some of us are bachelors!

It's much more violent. Towards women.

    It's also more misogynistic.

And I can see why you'd want a block on that, I just don't get why it has to be an "opt-out" rather than an "opt-in". Especially when the "opt-out" will affect the whole household, it seems. And anyone who really feels strongly about protecting there little one, can opt in.

The slight problem I have with this is what happened with the web on my cell phone. In the end, I had to verify I was an adult, simply to get access to sites that had been wrongly blocked. Or not. It blocked any site that had a swear word in it, or blocked any search times related to gambling, sex, drugs, terrorism...anything that isn't 100% totally suitable for a five year old. I am not a five year old. I am an adult who owns a cell phone, and I'm sure they have my date of birth on file over at HQ...

But still. Since I wasn't going to pay to unlock any site containing a swear word, I had to drag myself over to my providers store, explain what I wanted (And why, since I got a few looks, asking "Can I prove my age to access adult content on the internet?") and show driving license so I could get access to half the damn internet. That is my problem.

We block paedophilia over here anyway. That's fine. I would hope that nobody here is arguing that that content should be allowed in shape or form. But when it comes down to it, I can't see what the problem is with consenting adults.

They did manage to screw up that block though...and made it so that the whole country couldn't use Wikipedia.

Please do not link to adult sites of that nature on this website.

Anxiety Space is not a place for inappropriate, disturbing, revolting or abhorrent content. Anxiety Space is a mental health support site, not a place for pornography, crime, violence, or anything else that is inappropriate, find somewhere else for that. Inappropriate content may include text, images or video that:
At the moment, no, I don't think there is. If there is a block, it will be the hotel's wifi that is blocking it.

As for poker and casino sites, hell, there definately legal here, there's enough adverts on daytime TV as it is.

i personally think its a good idea, material such as that can be offensive, its protecting children from dodgie spam adverts which pop up or even protecting a child from trying to search it out. on the one part it does make it easier for 'lazy' parents but it also helps parents who don't have a clue about technology and wouldn't know how to block it or that don't think that their child is of the age where they will seek it out. it may cause an inconvenience for those who have to opt out of the scheme but those individuals are the ones who can learn how to remove the content blocker rather than some 12 year old boy who thinks its cool. porn can have a huge impact on children as well as the developing mind and taking any steps to protect those children and their innocence is in my opinion the right step.
