    Which quote should be followed?

So I was reading a thread and it reminded me of a question I always wondered and I never really know what to follow.

    We have to controversial quotes:

"The greatest gift you can give someone is a second chance"

    Then there is

"Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me"

I always wondered, if I give ale own a second chance when I shouldn't, it would make me look bad, yet I also believe people should be given a second chance. The second quote is kind of saying people shouldn't be given a second chance incase they just fool you, and it's your fault because you should know better.

Which one should be followed and why?

I don't know. I guess it depends on what the person did, why they did it, what effect it had on you, how long ago it was, lots of factors. People do change. That's life, we're never staying the same, we grow up, we learn from our mistakes. Or we get worse. I suppose that can happen too.

Although it's annoying I don't think one can be blamed and shamed for being gullible. So I don't believe in the 2nd quote.

I do believe in 2nd chances. People make mistakes. Depending on the seriousness of the transgression though, I don't believe in 3rd chances. In fact if a transgression is serious enough a 2nd chance should not be given either.

The first one is more relating to other people, and the second one is more relating to yourself. That's the way I see it.

Give other people a second chance, always. But also don't give them the chance to hurt you multiple times.

Seriously, the first statement seems to be reminding us that we all make mistakes and deserve second chances. The second one is saying, when I do give you a second chance, I'm doing it with my eyes open this time. I don't think it really blames you if the other person hurts you again. I think it means you just have knowledge ahead of time that you will possibly getting hurt.

Also, if a person is normally very judgmental and critical, they should take the advice of #1. If a person is a doormat and habitually gets themselves taken advantage of, then #2 applies to them. It depends on the person, (and the situation).

I'm just now able to laugh at him. While he was in the White House, it made me sick with worry, seriously...

I used that George W Bush quote in 2006 for an intro to a political song that was against him. It's interesting to hear it again.

Depends on the situation and the person involved, free will does not exist so there's a huge range of reasons and causes for people doing what they do which they have no control over.

Free Will does exist. People make their own decisions, however good or bad.

Free will is an illusion. Our behaviour is determined by environmental and biological factors. That doesn't mean we shouldn't take responsibility or shouldn't be held accountable for our actions, though.
