Rare, white deer appears in Oregon

It was a startling sight – even for avid animal watchers like Larry and Mary Harris.

The shock of white fur. The black tail. The splashes of brown spots, spackled about the buck's body.

"We look for deer all the time," said Larry Harris, a 74-year-old outdoorsman and cattle farmer in Damascus. "We've never seen one like this. Ever."

Aw, it's very pretty Sagan, wonder if it is part albino. I guess they don't survive well because they only blend into snowy areas not the brown woods.

I don't think he's albino, but rather piebald ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piebald ) For an animal that survives by blending in With native vegetation, it is an undesirable trait. It's illegal to hunt "piebald deer" in Oregon. Lucky for this guy.

I spotted a white strange looking deer once on my parents farm. I was outside picking up walnuts from the lawn and it started walking toward me. I was a bit frightened and went inside. My dad thinks it saw the bucket and was hungry. He said I probably could have captured it if I filled the bucket with some corn or grain. It had escaped from a university and there was a $5,000 reward for it.
