Let's see...
I was: taking a shower, taking a bath, cooking, cleaning, helping somebody with something, or out of the house for a quick trip to a nearby store and I left my phone inside to charge. I suppose various reasons combined with "but I forgot I had turned my ringtone off/to low and didn't hear the phone from where I was" would also work.
