An apartment has it's advantages, but I prefer a house - with a garage. I need space to work on things and an apartment just doesn't cut it.
I live in a condo (townhouse?) but I live in a rural resort area.
I am not going to post a picture of my actual house but it's pretty close to something like this.
EDIT: I found something that looked closer to it.
House, because they have backyards. In apartments you don't get any private space outdoors.
If I had plenty of money to heat and cool it, a house. Houses are great since you don't share walls with neighbors, so you can do what you want without worrying too much about bothering others with noise and stuff.
I did notice that houses are considerably colder than apartments. I froze my butt off in San Francisco the time I lived in a house even though my bedroom was on the 2nd floor. Was much warmer in a 2nd story apartment. Sometimes my toes would turn blue when I walked in the kitchen in that house. I would turn on the shower for 10 minutes before going in, so that the bathroom would be warmer when I got out. The landlady did heat it a few hours a day but you really can't heat it all the time, otherwise the gas bill would be $500+.
And if you live in a climate that snows, apartments are better since it's not your responsibility to shovel the snow. I've never had to do that but I heard it's a real pain.
