It is the main (only) reason to go to some of those places. Mardi Gras, Carnivale, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Have only been personally to four on the list.

^from the list you provided, one of the reasons for the #1 sin cities

    the drinking age is 18,
What's wrong with the drinking age being 18? Most of the world has a drinking age of 18, thats the drinking age in most of europe. That's the age of majority. I've never quite gotten why a drinking age should be 21, and why an adult shouldn't be allowed to drink. And most of the time the reasons people give are "well, I wouldn't like them to get drunk so soon after they get a drivers license" posted on internet forums. The same one that you see people moaning about under 30's being allowed to drive.

Actually, the reason why people think New Orleans is a sin city is because other people think so. In other words, people have this preconceived notion that anything goes during Mardi Gras so the tourists take off their clothes and act like they can get away with anything. Because the police can't stop this debauchery (not enough police) they overlook it, especially in the French Quarter. New Orleans main income is tourism. If the tourists want to take off their clothes and act the fool, let them. They'll give us more money that way. It's what makes our economy thrive in the tourism industry. It's not like we have any other big business besides refineries there. No company wants to put a ton of people there if they have to relocate them every time a bad hurricane comes through.

So New Orleans' "sin city" is just a way to get you people to give us money. We love to watch tourists get drunk and act stupid. Heck when I was homeless, I used to roll the drunk tourists for change after they passed out in the gutters. The people who were born and raised there (like me) are friendly, down home, family oriented people. We have learned to be that way because we know we need to be nice to tourists. We have a good time too and enjoy giving them a good time while they stay. But the people who are actual New Orleanians are not the way people think we are. We don't all have a pet alligator, don't all cook great (well, I do) and we don't all drink. I drank in my 20's for awhile, then said it was stupid because it made me feel bad. We also don't live on Bourbon Street and party every night.

Just wanted to give my two cents.

I'm not surprised about number one. Thailand is mostly for sex.
