Should I go to this birthday party?

I haven't been in a friend's birthday party in years, and the last time I actually enjoyed being in one was when I was like 6 years old. I'm a teenager now.
One of my friend's is going to have a birthday party soon, and he invited me, even though I believe he was just being nice. The thing is, this won't be like the birthday parties I was used to when I was a kid. It will be a dinner, it will end around 1AM and it's a bit likely that some are going to drink. Quite a few people are coming, I'd say... 15-20.

I think I will go, but I'm still not 100% sure. There will be quite a few people I don't know, and it would be HELL to talk to them. I'd also have to tell my parents about it (although I'm fairly sure they'll allow me to go).

If you had this opportunity, which could be an entrance to a normal social life, would you take it?

The upside to there being that many people there is I'm sure you won't be the only one milling around if you don't end up conversing for long. Smaller groups are more nerve-wracking since there's more pressure on you to initiate conversation. I had a couple opportunities to attend parties when I was a teenager, but I didn't go to them. I should have. I imagine it would have helped my social status a bit. I can tell you that I certainly regretted not going. If nothing else, it's some life experience under your belt and a chance to exercise your social skills.
