    Building your own house

Does anyone have any experience with this? I've read some stuff online and I've seen pictures of Facebook friends working on their own houses (mostly selfies when they were excited, not pictures of them working). Some of the people I've talked to said it's good since you get what you want in a house.

I usually feel that designs out there were done by people who know houses very well and did a lot of planning so I feel like that's good enough. Sometimes people have unrealistic expectations of what they want in a house and end up designing something that may be unrealistic or unstable. I would want to avoid that.

I'd have to have an architect and a civil engineer before I felt comfortable going forward with building a house. I'd also have to do a lot of extensive planning (at least a few weeks to several months) to know what works and what doesn't.

Do you mean building a house from the ground up or basically rebuilding it. My dad rebuilt out house. Like the only thing that was left were the outside walls, and the wooden beams inside. The house wasn't very big so he didn't have a whole lot of room for creativity but he did manage to add a room with a half bathroom and an addition to the back part of the house. There were some other stuff he did too but nothing major. It's not like he had a ton of money or much knowledge about building a house.

If you're planning something bigger, than you'd definitely need a professional to tell you what can work or not.

I live in an old house that I can tell was pre-central heating and pre-electricity. We've remodeled the kitchen. I almost expected to find the log walls. There is an odd ball chimney outside that was the original chimney for the coal stove that most likely was the original heat source. Oh yeah it was also pre-indoor bathroom. The radiator in one of the bedrooms goes through the wall into the bathroom.

I've always lived in quirky old house with maybe one closet. I had friends who lived in a house with a closet that had pegs, to hang I guess the dress you weren't wearing at the time.

I would really love to design my own house. At least the kitchen and entry into the house. It would definitely have a mudroom with almost like cubbies for everyone in the family to store their coats, shoes, book bags. The kitchen would have a pantry to store seldom used appliances such as canning stuff etc.
